Weddings in the movies are not like weddings in real life, or are they? On a day when anything can and will happen, maybe the boundaries between Hollywood (or Bollywood) and everywhere else dissolve. That’s the magic of weddings. In that spirit, here’s our compilation of Hollywood brides who got through the day with style and panache. Ladies, we salute you.
So, without further ado and in no particular order here are our 6 favourite Hollywood brides: (apologies for some of the horrible quality of the images, it’s all we could find!)
1. Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup in The Princess Bride (1987)
The hilarious ceremony forcibly uniting Buttercup to arch-villain Prince Humperdinck (officiated by a lisping Peter Cook) doesn’t quite take, but the Princess certainly looks the part in silvery robes, long blonde hair and a modest crown. Luckily her true love Westley arrives just in time for a truly happy ending.
2. Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan in Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 (2011)
The vampire-human union of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan takes places in a wisteria dripping forest bower with inter-specifies hostilities swirling. Carolina Herrera designed the form-fitting satin and lace wedding dress that launched a thousand sales when it became available for retail purchase after the film’s release in 2011.
3. May Rudolph as Lilian in Bridesmaids (2011)
Funny ladies Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy help Rudolph with a singularly chaotic journey towards the altar. In the end, her ceremony features a hastily adjusted couture wedding dress, a performance by Wilson Phillips, fireworks and puppies for everyone.
4. Aishwarya Rai as Lalita in Bride and Prejudice (2004)
This song and dance-filled take on cross-cultural romance is based loosely on the Jane Austen novel. The film ends with the double love match wedding of sisters Jaya and Lalita, celebrated in grand style (covered in gold bling atop elephants) in Amritsar, India.
5. Julia Roberts as Runaway Bride Maggie Carpenter (1999)
The classic bride with cold feet, Roberts leaves a serial assortment of grooms at the altar. She falls for journalist Richard Gere though and they wed quietly on a hilltop – and then ride horses off into the sunset happily ever after.
6. Andie MacDowell as Carrie in Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
Love interests Carrie and Charles (Hugh Grant) never actually tie the knot, but wedding ceremonies fuel their attraction and eventual union just the same. Carrie’s highland wedding to some other guy ends in tragedy, but is a lively traditional Scottish celebration up to that point.
Though the plot points can be crazy, and the costumes challenging to replicate, watching big budget screen weddings can be good psychological prep for the upcoming madness.
Here are a few more iconic movies that feature beautiful Hollywood brides in swoon-worthy dresses. Share them with the bridal party for laughs (mostly) and inspiration.
- The Best Man
- Rachel Getting Married
- 27 Dresses
- Betsy’s Wedding
- Wedding Crashers
